Forbes of Virginia

Forbes of Virginia virtual cemetery includes the known deceased descendants of Rev. John Holcomb Forbes and Mary Henry Nance Forbes in cemeteries across the US. Rev. John Forbes was a well-known local Methodist preacher in Virginia and North Carolina for more than 50 years in the mid to late 1800's. During the War Between the States, he was hired by Major Sutherlin of Danville VA to minister to the Confederate soldiers in the hospital in Danville. Rev. John also ministered to the Union soldiers in the hospitals and prisons in Danville. John and Mary had 9 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. In their later years, John and Mary lived with several of their adult children on a farm outside Danville in Pittsylvania County where he continued to preach. A cemetery was established on the farm and old records refer to it as the Forbes Burying Ground. John and Mary are buried here as are many of their descendants as well as Mary's sister Elizabeth Nance Fitzgerald and her descendants. Known today as the Forbes Fitzgerald Family Cemetery, it is maintained by family members who restored the cemetery and held reunions at the cemetery in the late 19th and early 20th century.
