Tailholt Cemetery

This small abandoned cemetery is located 3 miles west and 3-1/2 miles south of Medaryville. It was once found in the barnyard of the old Thomas Walter's farm in the northwest quarter of northeast quarter, section 33, Township 30 N., Range 5. The name of the little settlement of Tailholt was later changed to Davidsonville, which was layed out by Moses E. and Lewis Davidson. The plot was recorded September 16, 1850. The village consisted of 2 blocks, one street, one alley, a grist mill, a grocery store, and several dwellings. There was only one tombstone left in this little cemetery, Henrietta Lewis who died October 1, 1854. All the other tombstones have been destroyed and many thrown down the little hill. The barn no longer exists and the property Is owned by the late Darrel Culp & his wife Bonnie Culp. Another write up: Tailholt Cemetery (Davidsonville)This one time small burying plot has long disappeared. In 1850 a Moses Davidson plotted a small town here, consisting of two blocks, one a street, one an alley, and one the farm known as the "Thomas Walter's" or as the "Mrs. W. R. Johns" farm. The location was chosen because of the natural water power, a mill was erected in the bend of the Pinkamink River. It too has long since disappeared from the site. Not only was there a flour mill but a saw mill, and a whiskey distillery, all owned and operated by Mr. Haddox, and thus the village was also sometimes called, Haddoxtown. It is told that a horse broke through the bridge there one day, and it required the efforts of several men to free the animal. A group of men gathered around the horse and while some men took ahold of its tail and lifted, others shoved boards under it and finally freed the animal of its precarious position. After that incident the name "Tailholt" was almost invariably used. For more on this old village and cemetery, see the "History of Francesville & Community" by J.V.
