Carlton Veal Carter, age 90, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, March 20, 2014 surrounded by his family. Born in Winterville, Georgia on May 11, 1923, he was the seventh of ten children born to the late Clarence Thurmond (Doc) Carter, Sr. and Jessie DeLay Carter. He was the last surviving member of this family.A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served his country with distinction in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After the war ended he returned home, married Martha Harris and began farming and working in the landscape business. He later began working for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, retiring from there in 1985 with 21 years of service. He also had a tree service with his two sons. For the past seven years he had been a devoted caregiver for Martha.Mr. Carter served two terms on the Oglethorpe County Board of Commissioners. He was a member of the James T. Rayle American Legion Post #123, serving in many different capacities including Commander.A devoted follower of Christ, he was a longtime member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, the Sunshine Club, and served many years as a deacon.Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Martha H. Carter; two sons and their wives, Randy and Leslie Carter and Bruce and Lisa Carter all of Winterville; two daughters and their husbands, Veronica and Tommy Fleming of Winterville and Elaine and Benny Allen of Crawford; grandchildren Scott and Cris Fleming, Todd and Miranda Fleming, Gregory and Crystal Allen, Ashlee and Benjamin Lawhorn, Anna Carter, Brandon and Leanne Carter and Jesse Carter; great-grandchildren Jarrett, Jordan, and Jenna Fleming, Kyle and Maggie Starr, Carter and Lincoln Allen, and Jackson Lawhorn; one great-great grandchild, Bentley Starr and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services will be held at Sandy Cross Baptist Church, Lexington-Carlton Rd., Lexington, GA at 2PM on Saturday, March 22, 2014 with Rev. David Johnston and Rev. Terry James officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
