B-17F #42-31006 Lt Blackner

This aircraft crashed approximately 20 miles NW of Salt Flats TX when it went out of control while flying in formation. The crash was due to what is believed to have been a materials/mechanical failure in the oxygen system. All five airmen on board lost their lives in the valiant service of the country. There is a plan to place a monument at the crash site. Lt Max Derry is listed here with the others as an eyewitness - he was in the wing aircraft and he was not killed in the crash.
