SS Astral (L)

A steam tanker owned by Sacony-Vacuum Oil Co of New York, the Astral was enroute from Aruba to Portugal with a cargo of gasoline and kerosene when she was sunk in the North Atlantic. She was unarmed, unescorted and neutrally marked with an American flag painted on her side for easy identification. German sub U-43 spotted her on Dec 1 and tracked her for several hours before firing a torpedo which missed. On the morning of Dec 2, U-43 fired two torpedoes which hit, one in the stern and one amidships. She exploded into flames and sank within minutes. There were no survivors. The Astral was one of four US merchant ships that were sunk before America entered the war.
