SS Azalea City (L)

The Azalea City was a U.S. merchant vessel owned by Waterman Steamship Co., Mobile Alabama. She was unarmed and unescorted as she left Trinidad bound for Philadelphia on Feb. 12, 1942. On Feb 21st she was spotted by German submarine U-432 in heavy seas about 125 miles east-southeast of Ocean City, Maryland. Three torpedoes were fired - the first one missed, the second hit amidships, and a little over an hour later the third struck forward of the bridge, causing the Azalea City to capsize. None of the eight officers and thirty men on board survived.
