Bio

6th generation Australian with a fascinating mix of ancestry from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Germany & New York. I am interested in the origins of the following surnames:

Evans ( Cardiff-Wales)
Holly (New York)
Keegan (Ireland)
Hodge (Surrey/Sussex England)
Chappell (York - England)
Whitla (Ireland)
Thwaites (Middlesex - England)
Schwager (Southern Germany)
Ridley (Durham - England)
Swinton (Dundee-Scotland)
Redmond (Ireland)
Ethersey (Buckingham-England)
Sandall (Ireland)
Durrant (England)
Pattenden (Sussex-England)
Mathews (England)

Note. If you upload a newspaper clipping to any of my memorials could you please tick the "other" box before you press save. This in turn, reserves the top position for the headstone/grave photo.
Thanks

Fascinated with the pioneers of Newcastle & believe that their stories & legacies need to be retold, not forgotten. Interested in those who bear no headstone with the Old Wallsend Cemetery, St Andrew's Waratah & Honeysuckle Cemetery being front of mind…

A note on Old Wallsend Cemetery:
Closed for burials in 1896 when the new cemetery opened at Birmingham Gardens. Unfortunately the records have not been digitised & all headstones have long been removed with the grounds being turned into a rest park.

I've managed to add around one third of the memorials to the Old Wallsend Cemetery. ( A small dint in the estimated 3.5K estimated buried there) They are not my relations (apart from the Ridley family) just my humble workings to keep our loved ones in our hearts & in the pages of history. Please don't hesitate to contact me for a memorial transfer if you spot a family member there.

Memorials have been sourced, via funeral notices on Trove & Parish records at the local Newcastle library. Also thanks to a member here named, Margaret who provided me with her detailed records of study. Maybe you have some relations to add here too?

Many hands, make light work….

Also thanks to the writer from the Newcastle Herald who gave us a fascinating insight into Newcastle's graveyards in the early 1900's. A valuable series called : "Where Pioneers Sleep".

UPDATES:

Old Wallsend Cemetery

I have fully completed all last names beginning with "A" to the Old Wallsend Cemetery listing. These records have been updated according to original records held at Newcastle Library. If you need an updated record for any other last name, please contact me & I will double check or add it on my next visit there.

I have completed all inscriptions from graves 1-72.
278 graves mentioned in the Register & Plan of burials prepared by the Town Clerk in 1955.

ST Andrews Waratah
(Another Cemetery without headstones!
Estimated burials 2000.)

I have completed an update on all last names missing, beginning with the letters A & B. Yes it's a work in progress (est. 1200 burials) I can't do it alone, so let's keep on adding & connecting our Newcastle pioneers!

Honeysuckle Cemetery
Around 200 bodies were exhumed & relocated to Sandgate in 1916.

Presbyterian
I have completed an update on all last names beginning with the letter A.

*Wesleyan Methodist
All burial submissions are now complete.

Christ Church Cathedral

All burials beginning with last names: A, I, N, Q, Y. have now been added.

All burials added from 1820 - 1828 (taken from official burial registers).
Most are Prisoners of the Crown so if you're searching for a convict, take a look.

*Many thanks to The Newcastle Family History Society, for their precious time & valuable resources.
