Bio

I was born January 30, 1960 at Memorial Hospital (currently called Lakeland Medical Center) in St. Joseph, MI. My mother's ancestors had mostly come to the U.S. from England, Scotland, and Ireland. One line had settled in Virginia and Tennessee, then moved to Glasgow, Barren County Kentucky.

My maternal grandfather, Charles Andrew Roe, was from the Indianapolis, IN area. He was a carpenter and minister, and had previously been married. His first wife died at age 33 in 1914, from general septicemia, post op surgery for appendicitis and drainage of gallbladder, leaving him with three young children.

His second marriage to Minnie Lee Mansfield produced only one child, my mother, Gladys Lee Roe. My grandmother, Minnie, died in 1941, at age 52, from cancer when my mom was 9 years old. My grandfather then moved to St. Joseph, MI., along the eastern shores of Lake Michigan, with his young daughter. He died at age 86, when I was 2 years old.

My fathers family had migrated from Germany, and settled in Scottdale, Berrien Count, MI., a small community south of St. Joe. My paternal grandfather was a farmer, who married a young German girl, and bought a second farm (dairy) in Scottdale, MI. They had four sons, but the youngest one drowned at the age of 7, in a small pond on the edge of the family farm.

Their oldest son, my father, Louis James Eisenhart, grew up working the dairy farm. He was a star athlete in track & field at the Catholic High School, played semi-pro football, and became a Professional Wrestler in the 1950's, training with Bobo Brazil, and grappling with greats like Dick the Bruiser, the original Sheik, and Angelo Poffo (Randy Savage's father).

Lou married Gladys Lee Roe, and lived on the farm in Scottdale, but sold the dairy cows in the late 1950's. My dad became a police officer in Benton Harbor, MI., and later became Sheriff of Stevensville, MI, also owning his own private security patrol agency. Louis and Gladys had four children, of which I was the youngest. My mother was mostly a stay at home mom, but occasional worked as a waitress, and later in life as a restaurant hostess, and freelance writer, contributing historical writings about St. Joe, and Scottdale, MI.

I grew up attending the St. Joe public schools, with interests in art, wrestling, archery, bowling, camping, canoeing, and the martial art. My father was the Scoutmaster of the local Boy Scout Troop, and my brothers and I spent a lot of our youth participating in many scouting events.

I played football in Junior high, & after 3 years of wrestling, held several records, and was voted the most valuable wrestler on my team, then I wrestled 3 years on High School varsity. I was intermittently learning self defense from my father since the age of 5, and Judo from his brother, a 3rd Degree Black Belt. I joined a judo dojo at age 15 in 1975, then switched to a Taekwondo dojang in 1976.

I graduated in 1978, and became a Black Belt, and opened my first Taekwondo school at age 18. enlisted in the U.S. Army, and graduated from the Field Artillery Surveyor school at Fort Sill, OK., in 1981. I remained in the Army reserves for 6 years, while working as police officer for St. Joseph Police Dept., and teaching Taekwondo.

My parents divorced, and my dad fathered a son out of wedlock. My father died from diabetes in 1995. In 1997, I married LuAnn Hildebrandt (family of German ancestry), and live in Sawyer, MI., south of Bridgman on the shores of Lake Michigan. She had been a Taekwondo student, earned 3rd Degree Black Belt. From December of 1996 to January of '97, we took a trip to South Korea, where we toured Seoul, Jeju Island, studied and taught at several Taekwondo schools.

We got engaged on Valentine's Day, '97, and married in July. We have 3 boys. Our oldest boys, born in 1998, are twins. One of which is limited-verbal Autistic, the other is now a 2nd Degree Black Belt Instructor. Our 3rd son is also on the Autism spectrum, so I have always home schooled our boys. Our fourth son was stillborn, and is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Bridgman, MI.

My wife has worked as a Payroll manager for nearly 40 years. I am currently a 7th Degree Associate Grandmaster with the United States Chung Do Kwan Association, and own Blue Knight Taekwondo in Bridgman, MI. I was recently diagnosed with neck cancer of the lymph nodes, and underwent a month of chemo & radiation. I am currently in recovery, and running my Taekwondo school.
