Bio

I live in Sharpsburg, Coweta County, Georgia. I have done Y-111 DNA and autosomal testing on Family Tree DNA and learned that, paternally, I have as many connections with Williamsons as I do with Smiths, and that my paternal roots are Welsh. The connection with Welsh families is also strong on my maternal side, and I suspect some overlap between my paternal and maternal lines. Most of both families have been in Georgia since the late 1700's. Generally, these families seem to have migrated from either PA/DE/MD down the "Great Wagon Road" or from SE Virginia where they merged in the central Piedmont of NC, then into upstate SC. From there, they entered east GA and generally followed the "fall line" westward across the state, into AL and on to TX. A branch of my paternal line also seems to have headed due west from NC into east and middle TN and beyond. I suspect involvement on both sides of my family in the Regulator movement in NC and have a hunch that many may have been Quakers prior to that event or leading up to the Revolution. By the time they reached GA, a disproportionate amount (on both sides of my family) were Primitive Baptists. Methodists are also strongly represented, as are Presbyterians among Scots-Irish branches. These religious links have provided strong clues for me. Nevertheless, Smith is a difficult name to track, especially when I appear to descend from 5 different Smith lines! (Hopefully my hunch is correct that at least 2 of them are the same line.) Other surnames that seem to show up on both sides of my family include Allen, Boykin, Cox, Hunter, Johnston, etc.

I am researching the following families...

Paternal Grandfather (Smith) [Troup Co, GA]: Also Williamson, Marsh, Gates, McCallay/McCauley, Satterwhite, Hunter, Moffett, Chambliss/Chamness, Allen, Cox, Brooks, Freeman, Hearn(e), Johnston, Williams (2 lines), Fish, Phillips, A(i)kin, Jones, Manning, Willingham, and perhaps a 2nd Smith line. Other allied (but not necessarily related) families include Hogg/Hogue, Anderson, Floyd, Thompson, Cleaveland, Jo(u)rdan, Hollingsworth, etc.

Paternal Grandmother (Poucher) [Suwanee Co, FL]: Also Houck, Caldwell, Moretz, Baker, Richardson, Smith, Bolick, Dickson/Dixon, Cox, etc.

Maternal Grandfather (Alexander) [Berrien Co, GA]: Also Mock, McMillan, Griffin, Strickland, Sumner, Smith, Boykin, Burke, Tucker, Henderson, Paulk, Stearns, Hunter, Wells, Tanner, Thompson, etc.

Maternal Grandmother (Almand) [Walton Co, GA]: Also Malcom, Clower, Lane, Preston, Smith, Allen, Hurst, Montgomery, Anderson, Johnston, Hansford, Perkins, Morgan, Boone, Harrison, Hawthorn(e)
