Bio

I have been doing genealogy research on my Shiley ancestry for approximately 40 years. In recent years, I have added my maternal ancestors, the Shadle's, to my research. Both families are of German descent. The Shiley's were predominately from Dauphin County, PA while the Shadle's were from Northumberland County, PA.

In addition to Shiley and Shadle, my ancestry also includes surnames Paul, Hoke, Becher, Baker, Miller, Messner, and Wirt, Wert.

I was born and raised near Lykens, PA, a small town in Dauphin County. By the mid-1700's my Shiley ancestors were already living in Dauphin County. Some were homesteaders in Clark's Valley (Rush Township), just north of Harrisburg. In time, they migrated further north to Powell's Valley, (Jackson Township) where many were farmers. However, the coal mining jobs near Lykens and Wiconisco, drew many descendants away from their farming relatives in Powell's Valley. As the coal mining industry and railroads spread to the west, many Shiley families moved with them to Ohio and beyond.

Years ago, I documented my research using Personal Ancestral File (PAF), but today I use Roots Magic as the main repository for my research.

My goal is to provide more complete and accurate information for the FAG Memorials of my Shiley and Shadle ancestors, and related others. I often find that source documents, and even gravestones, provide conflicting data. When that happens, I use my extensive research to determine which data is correct.

I am hoping through Find a Grave, other descendants will find me and reach out to share information, especially photographs.
