While you are recording cemeteries in Louisiana, if you happen upon a cemetery that has been vandalized, abandoned or neglected, Louisiana Cemetery Preservation would like to encourage you to report the cemetery to local, parish, and state leaders.

Louisiana Cemetery Preservation has passed new legislation in the year 2010 that assists with preserving Louisiana's historical treasures in our communities - its cemeteries. There are new requirements with regards to reporting abandoned, neglected, or unknown cemeteries in Louisiana (within 72 hours) to the Louisiana Department of Archaeology. 225-342-8170 or [email protected].

There is also a new Louisiana Historic Cemetery Preservation Board made up of nine members familiar with the cemeteries of Louisiana and Cemetery Law within Louisiana. The board members are currently pending approval by the Lt. Governor of Louisiana.


It has been the effort of many to report vandalized, abandoned, or poorly maintained cemeteries through this website here
