Born in Laurens, he was a son of the late William "Dub" Drayton Burns Sr. and Frances Leopard Burns. He was an inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was a member of First Baptist Church, Brig. Gen. Samuel McGown Camp #40 Sons of the Confederate Veterans where he was currently the Camp Commander, MacBeth Light Artillery Civil War Reenactors, and the Laurens County Cruisers.
Surviving are a son, William "Drayte" Drayton Burns III and fiancée Carla of Laurens; a brother, Robert "Robbie" Fowler Burns of Clinton; and two grandchildren, Eric Lee Burns and Ethan Stuart Burns. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Frances Carole Burns Sumerel.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 am, Wednesday September 5, 2012, at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Rickey Letson and Dr. Bev T. Kennedy Jr. burial followed at Warrior Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
