Milton Oliver Valentine was born April 13, 1847, in Carroll County, Maryland, the son of Josiah and Emily Shriner Valentine. He was married twice. On December 28, 1871, in Frederick County, Maryland to Mary Elizabeth Nusbaum Fogle, daughter of Samuel and Mary Baumgardner Nusbaum. She had been previously married to Amos Fogle. Milton and Mary were the parents of 4 children: Edward Grant, Virginia May, Thomas Howard and Rosa Emma Valentine. Mary passed away on October 24, 1905. Milton married 2nd on October 9, 1909, in Walkersville, Frederick County, to Gertrude Irene Dern, daughter of Abraham and Anna Elizabeth Reddick Dern. They were the parents of one child, Gertrude Naomi Valentine. Milton passed away on January 9, 1928, near Libertytown, Frederick County, and was buried on the 11th in Union Chapel Cemetery there.

[note: Mary Elizabeth Nusbaum was first married to Amos Fogle on June 27, 1863, who died less than a month after their marriage, most likely during the Civil War]

From the Frederick Daily News of May 4, 1895:

"DAYSVILLE---MAY 1. Mr. M. O. Valentine, proprietor of the Buck Forest Holler Mills, while on his way to Frederick with a load of flour last Monday, at Ceresville bridge met with uite a painful accident, which might have been serious. His horse began kicking, knocking the dash-board off and cutting an ugly gash in his leg just below the knee-cap, which made Mr. Valentine very sick for a little while. He went on his way to Frederick and had the wound dressed by Dr. Smith."

Valentine and family Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hamilton, daughter Margarete; Mrs. Howard Valentine, of Chestnut Grove, visited M. O. Valentine and family Sunday."


Will of Milton Oliver Valentine, written March 11, 1920, proved January 16, 1928:

"Libertytown, Frederick County, Maryland. I, Milton O. Valentine, of the County of Frederick, State of Maryland, being in perfect health of body, of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say. First, I bequeath to my wife Gertrude Irene Valentine the sum of fifteen hundred dollars in cash, to my daughter Gertrude Naoma Valentine the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, to be deposited in the Walkersville Savings Bank until she becomes eighteen years of age, the interest to be paid semi-annually, to her mother, for her to use as she sees fit as I appoint her, her guardian. I also give to my daughter, the said Gertrude Naoma Valentine, the organ now in the home. I give and bequeath to my wife Gertrude Irene Valentine our bedstead and bedding complete, also all articles of furniture, the other household goods which she purchased with her own money during our married life, the money to be paid to my wife the said Gertrude Irene Valentine and to my daughter Gertrude Naoma Valentine at once. I also request after all expenses are paid, the residue of my real estate and personal property shall be disposed of the highest bidder and divided equally, share and share alike, between my four children by a former wife, Edward G. Valentine, Thomas H. Valentine, Virginia M. Wagner, and Rosie E. Hamilton, and I do hereby appoint Edward G. Valentine and Thomas H. Valentine, my executors without bond. In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand and seal, this 11th day of March, in the year 1920. MILTON O. VALENTINE (SEAL). Signed, sealed, published and declared by the above named Milton O. Obituary for Milton Oliver Valentine from the Frederick Post of Tuesday, January 10, 1928:

"Milton O. Valentine, well-known and highly respected resident of Libertytown District, died at his home, near Libertytown, Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock, aged 80 years, eight months and 26 days. He engaged in the milling business for a number of years and later conducted a sawmill. He was a member of the Lutheran church, Union Chapel, and was secretary and treasurer of the cemetery board of that church. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary E. Nusbaum, by whom he is survived by four children as follows: Edward Valentine, Walkersville; Howard Valentine, Libertytown; Mrs. Jennie Wagner, Daysville; Mrs. Rose Hamilton, Chestnut Grove. His second wife was Miss Gertrude Dern, who survives with one daughter, Mrs. Warner Hahn, at home. Funeral will be held Wednesday, meeting at the house at 12 o'clock with services at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. R. C. Sorrick, Woodsboro. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining. Powell and Albaugh, funeral directors."

Valentine, late of Frederick County, Maryland, deceased, as stated by Thomas H. Valentine, surviving executor. Inventory of estate, including sale of real estate, amounted to $10,359.72, less debts of $1,715.39 (including 10% commission allowed by Orphans' Court to accountant), leaving a total of $8,644.33 for distribution. Distribution according to will of testator:

--To Gertrude Naomi Valentine (Hahn), daughter, $1,500.00;
