Born in Williamsburg County, South Carolina near the present town of Kingstree, he was a son of Jane Ard, brother of Franklin, and John J Ard. Franklin also died in the War and John J became a POW. All of them served in the 15th SC Infantry. He was the husband of Leanora "Nora" Ard and the father of Tom and Mary.

Company G, 15th S.C. Infantry, Kershaw's Brigade, McLaws' Division, Magruder's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA.

Residence was not listed; 35 y.o. butcher.
Enlisted on 9/16/1861 at Lightwoodknot Springs, near Columbia, SC., he was mustered into Captain J.B. Chandler's Company, 15th South Carolina Volunteers as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company G, 15th South Carolina Infantry.)
Detailed 4/1862 as butcher for the Commissary.
Present or accounted for on all Rolls until Killed In Action in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va.
A settlement claim was filed on 22 February 1864 and signed by Mary Ard.

The 15th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in September, 1861, at Lightwoodknot Springs, near Columbia, South Carolina. Its members were raised in the counties of Richland, Union, Lexington, Kershaw, Fairfield, and Williamsburg. This regiment sustained 54 casualties at Chancellorsville.
