William Charles Crellin was born on 11 December 1881 in Peel, Isle of Man. His mother was Rebecca Ann Crellin. She later married William Angus Kewley in 1888 and they had a daughter, Chas's half sister, named Rebecca Ann Kewley. The family continued to live in the Isle of Man, U.K.

He was known as Chas in his adult life. His first wife died leaving a young daughter, Mary. Charles and his new wife, Annie White Crellin, came over to Canada and settled in Brock Street, Peterborough in 1923. His daughter Mary came over in 1926 and married James Miller. They had a daughter Edith M Miller, and they also lived in Peterborough.
Chas and Annie had two sons, John(Jack) and Roy. Roy married and had a son, Richard.
Chas had seen military service in Canada before settling here.
