"Jack" Phillips was born in Laneville, Rusk County, Texas June 20, 1909 to Sylvanus W. Phillips and Mary R. Gross. He went to work for Humble Oil Company. Driving through Alto while working, he stopped to eat and met the love of his life, Laura Williams singing in the parking lot of her family restaurant at the busy highway intersection, where she would sing to drum up business. They married May 16, 1936. They were blessed with one daughter, Jacqueline Sue (Sally).

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; Sylvanus W.and Mary R. Phillips, his lovely wife, Laura Phillips and his little grandson Hal (Harold Bauer,Jr.) Left to mourn his loss were his beautiful daughter; Sally Bauer, grandsons; Mark Bauer, Kevin Bauer, grand daughters; Staci Bauer, Kristi Smith (Paul), and Karen Bauer; grandson Hayden and many close Family and Friends.

Jack was a quiet and kind, generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. Known by most respected by all. "Gakki" to his grandkids. He retired from Exxon/Hunble Oil. Beginning in 1978, he proudly served as Honorable Justice of The Peace of Pct. 2, Cherokee County, Texas for several years. When family would come for visits to the Phillips' home, Jack would gather the kids up to take them for a ride in the back of his Ford pickup. They always looked forward to his "bear hunt" rides around the deep piney woods near Alto. Basically just a ride, but the kids thought it was such a great adventure and always kept their eyes peeled for "the bears". Most nights at the house the scanner was monitored. Hank Williams' old 73 records were sometimes playing on an old Victrolla. He always had White Charolais cows out in the pasture.

Uncle Jack was one of the best men I ever met. He would help anyone, anyway he could. A Gentle Strength whose smile would light up any place.
