He was employed for more than 30 years by Robert F. Zeigler as a sheet metal worker. He was a Ham radio operator, and loved to paint pictures and build clocks.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Semler Butts; two daughters, Octavia Starry of Hagerstown and Tina Hultslander and her husband, Brian, of Funkstown, Md.; one granddaughter, Courtney Starry of Hagerstown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Melvin A. Butts, Jr.; and one daughter, Rita Sue Butts.
Funeral services were held at Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown; burial was in Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg.
