John immigrated from Fermanagh,Ireland to Peterborough Ontario and married Jane Porter. He became a prominent resident of the town and obtained a large measure of success as a teacher. John and Jane had eight children, George Archibald, Mary Elizabeth, Edward Rogers, Roland William, Alice Eleanor, Annie Lillian, Frank Porter and John Wallace. He died 11 May 1911 and was buried in Little Lake Cemetery, Section 1, Row 3.
