James Head is the son of Capt. Benjamin Head, Sr. (1731-1803) and Martha Sharman (1734-1821). He was married to Elizabeth Janet Powell (1756-1827).

James had service in the Revolutionary War. In the 1790's, he and several siblings removed from Orange County, Virginia and settled in Elbert County, Georgia. His mother was brought there after his father died in 1803.
