Lt John Tillman, Previously Listed As Missing, Dead

Second lieutenant John R. Tillman, 22, son of Mrs. John Tillman, 470 Johnson street, who was reported missing in action September 5, was killed in action over France August 18, a telegram from the War department informed his mother and his wife, the former Bette Englerth, 312 East Fourth street, this morning.

Lieutenant Tillman was born October 29, 1921, attended Winona Senior High school and Winona Teachers college and was employed by Bailey & Bailey before entering service January 31, 1943.

He trained at San Antonio, Texas; Pine Bluff Ark.; Coffeyville, Kan.; and Moore Field, Texas, where he received his commission and his wings December 5, 1943. Later he was stationed at Salt Lake City, Utah, Baton Rouge, La. Galveston, Texas, and Bruining Army Air Base, Neb. before going overseas on May 1, 1944.

He was stationed in England and did escort bombing and strafing flights over Germany and France. He had been awarded the Air Medal. He flew P-40 and P-47 planes in combat.

Survivors are his mother, his wife and one brother, Second Lieutenant Franklin Tillman who is stationed at Dayton Ohio.
