Charles E. Campbell, age 79, Springfield, Missouri, was born the son of Ross E. Campbell and Francis Campbell.
He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1951, attended Grinnell College, and University of Kansas. He joined General Motors Corporation as a production supervisor in 1963.
He joined the CIA in 1966. Attended the department of State Security School in Washington, D.C. and CIA Officer Training. He spent a total of 24 years in the United States Government, consisting of 7 years in the United States Marine Corps, and 17 years as an Operations Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency in the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia and the Unites States.
Chuck spent a number of years abroad and as a result, developed a deep understanding of foreign cultures, the economic and political realities of the countries where he had been involved. Later, after returning from an overseas tour in 1973, he served in the CIA headquarters in the Washington, D.C. area. He was assigned to the agency's academy teaching young officers the skills they would need during the course of their careers in the directorate of operations.
His career has been a progression of personal growth that has been rewarded by promotions, and highlighted by two intelligence stars for valor which is unprededented. He retired from the CIA in 1983. He also worked for Republic Ford after retiring and settling in the Springfield, MO area.
Chuck had an excellent sense of humor and generally could find something funny in just about anything in life. He had been called a character on a great number of occassions. Chuck loved his family and liked to laugh and loved to Bass fish on a good lake. He will be forever remembered in our hearts as a loving husband, a devoted and caring father and a proud grandfather.
Chuck leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Cheryl Campbell of the home and his three daughters, Kristen Campbell, Kansas City, MO, Bridget Campbell, Kansas City, MO and Kelly Brock and husband David, Aurora, MO; and two unforgettable grandsons, who he spent many wonderful weekends with, Michael and Nicholas Brock, Aurora, MO; and a sister, Barbara Helms; and a niece Susie in Hollister, MO.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 1:00 PM in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, Springfield, Missouri. His cremains will be interred at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery Springfield in a private ceremony at a later date.
