Margarete Louise (Vaile) Meares passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept 21, 2012 at her home at St Luke's Assisted Living Center, Carthage, MO.
She was born on Dec 12, 1924 in Webb City, the daughter of Ray Vaile and Daisy Hewig Vaile. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1942. She actively supported the war effort by traveling throughout the United States with her lifelong friend Marcella Willoughby, notably performing ordnance work in Long Beach, CA.
After the war, she returned to Carthage where she married Vance Meares, and started her life calling in Reeds, as CEO, CFO, judge, teacher, nurse, chef, therapist, and resource adviser. These all fell under her most prized title of "mom" to eight children, Colleen, Bruce, Barry, Terry, Kelly, Rhese, Rebecca, and Bryan. In addition, she worked part-time as a postal clerk, seamstress, produce canner, Democratic committee-woman, election official, experimental cook, gardener and baby-sitter for another generation of Meares grandkids.
While she was always busy with something, she could always be counted on to provide a positive perspective during a crises, help with a school project and provide wise counsel during growing pains, sometimes just by listening. In 2008, she moved from Reeds to St. Luke's, where she found a warm and loving home. She had to give up her beloved gardening, but was able to put energies into other efforts such as couponing and quilting.
She was always the gracious host and particularly enjoyed the frequent visits from her brother, John Vaile, and his wife, Brenda as well as seeing her five surviving children, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson and other friends. She is survived by a warm, loving, imaginative, and generous nature shared freely with her family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, Sept 25 at St. Luke's, Carthage, followed by a graveside service at 11:00 at Dudman Springs Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Knell Mortuary, Carthage, MO.
