Daniel Richmond Edwards (1897-1967) - Find a Grave Memorial

World War I Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Mooreville, Texas, he served as a Private 1st Class in Company C, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, First Division, US Army. After returning to duty from hospital, he reported to his unit in actions near Soissons, France. On July 18, 1918, although suffering pain from a previous shattered arm wound, Private 1st Class Edwards crawled alone into an German trench for the purpose of capturing or killing soldiers known to be concealed there. He killed four of the men and took the remaining four men prisoners. While taking the four prisoners to the rear, one of the enemy was killed by a explosive enemy shell which also completely shattered one of Private 1st Class Edwards' legs, causing him to be immediately evacuated to the hospital. For bravery in the face of the enemy and his previous gallant acts, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 04, 1923. He also is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star Medal and served in World War II, achieving the rank of Major. He died at age 70 near Lake Ouachita, Arkansas.
