Glasco Postmaster 1949-1954

Glasco Sun, Aug. 12, 1954, page 1:
Charles Edward Schneider was born at Abilene, Kansas February 18, 1924, the son of Claude and Agnes Schneider. He passed away at Lincoln, Nebraska, August 6, 1954, at the age of 30 years, 5 months and 18 days.

At the age of two Eddie ( as we all knew and called him) was baptized in the Methodist church. During his lifetime he attended Baptist and Christian churches. He received his schooling in Dickinson county, Kansas and graduated from the Dickinson County High School in 1942.

He united in marriage with Lois McCollough February 14, 1943, at Glasco, Kansas. To this marriage were born two children, Shirley Sue, age 10, and Larry Edward, age 7.

Eddie was a partner in the McCollough Oil Co. for several years, and on August 15, 1949, at the age of 25, was appointed Glasco's postmaster. In this capacity, he served the community and the government honestly, faithfully and well for almost five years. His true Christian spirit was exhibited daily in his contacts with his many friends and neighbors. His smile and friendly "hello" made him a friend of everyone and he loved lending a helping hand to his fellowman.
He served his country in World War II from May, 1943 to October, 1945, including six months service as a member of a B-24 combat crew in the 15th Air Force in Italy.

He was a member of Glasco Lodge No. 292, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, having entered March 19, 1947, passed June 11, 1947, and was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason, December 3, 1947. He was also a member of Beloit Chapter No. 47, Royal Arch Masons, Cyrene Commandery No. 23, Beloit, Kansas; Isis Shrine, Salina, Kansas, Priscilla Chapter No. 260, Order of the Eastern Star, and Arthur Pilcher Post No. 212, American Legion, Glasco, Kansas.

Other activities included the Solomon Valley Flood Control Association, of which he was president. In this capacity, he served not just the community, but a large geographical region, devoting tireless energy and much of his time, toward the objective of flood prevention, conservation of resources, and the prevention of loss of life and money.
Eddie was taken from us while entering the prime period of his life at the age of 30, to occupy that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, the two children, Shirley Sue and Larry Edward, his parents, Claude and Agnes Schneider of Lincoln, Nebraska; a sister, Eloise of Salina; plus numerous relatives and countless numbers of friends.

Funeral services were conducted Monday morning, August 9, at 10:00 at the Christian church in Glasco, with Rev. Eugene Smith of Wichita officiating. Vocal music was sung by Ronald King, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Edw. Berndt. Casket bearers were George Colwell, Lowell Nutland, Henry Horn, John Harper, Frank Colwell, and Tom Butler. Interment was in Glasco cemetery, with McDonald Funeral Home in charge.
