HISTORIC OLD HOMESTEAD SEES ITS MISTRESS DIE

The historic old Tucker homestead on Broadway and Jones street, in which last week occurred the death of Matilda Tucker, 82, has been the scene of succession of births, deaths and marriages for more than 100 years.
Mrs.Tucker and her husband, the late Captain William S.Tucker, who died in 1923, were married, lived and died in the house and the old home was the birthplace of all their eight children. Years ago the home was used as an Indian mission by Father Richards, of Detroit. The Indians would come in with their faces smeared with war paint and sit about the floor, never heeding the rabbits and skunks that would wander in and out over the threshhold .
Fifteen years ago the Tuckers celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Eight years later , Mr.Tucker died at the age of 81. He was born in the old home in 1842 fought in the Civil war in his early twenties, and sailed on the Great Lakes from the age of nine until he retired at 65.
Mrs.Tucker survived her husband seven years. Her recent death comes after an extended illness due to old age. She is survived by seven children; three daughters, Mrs. W.E.Childs, of Cleveland. Mrs. Amos Peltier, of Mount Clemens, and Mrs. A.L.Robson, of Detroit; and Arthur and Charles, both of Mount Clemens. A daughter, Mrs. William Nash, died 10 years ago.
Funeral services were held at the home and later at St.Peter's Church Monday. The Rev.Fr.D.A.Hayes officiated. The W.R.C. attended the services in a body. The pallbearers were Earnest Grant, Miles Martell, August Dubay, Bert Paya, Oscar Brehler and Clarence Dubay, all cousins of the deceased. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery.
