SAEGERTOWN — SAEGERTOWN — Glenn Alfred Canfield, 74, resident of 17679 Highway 86, Saegertown, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a courageous battle with cancer. He had lived in the Saegertorwn area since 1959.

Born on Nov. 1, 1935, in Meadville, he is a son of Eva Castile Canfield and the late Arthur B. Canfield. On Feb. 25, 1956, he married the former Donna Lois Halsey and she remains to mourn his loss.

Glenn graduated from Townville High School in 1954 and while in school was Crawford County FFA president in 1953 and received the star farmer award in 1954. Following graduation, Glenn apprenticed to become a tool and die maker at Layke Tool & Die in Meadville for four years. He then was employed by Talon Inc. in Meadville from 1959 until 1961 and was transferred in 1961 to Paramount Die Casting, a subsidiary of Talon located in Seymour, Ind., as manager of the facility. In 1964, he co-founded Actco Tool & Manufacturing in Meadville where he was involved until his retirement in 2001. In 1982, he co-founded Aztec Tool & Die in El Paso, Texas, and in 1995, he co-founded Actco Metrology Services in Meadville.

Glenn was engaged in several hobbies for which he was well known. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening along with making his lawn outstanding by landscaping and by placing a large pine apple granite monument at his residence located on the corner of Highway 86 and Erie Street, Saegertown. Additionally, he collected and possessed many antique sleigh bells and vintage matchbox cars. Glenn was a member of Saegertown United Methodist Church where he was active serving on many committees, particularly the Building Committee. He was a longtime member of the Iroquois Club at Conneaut Lake and the Meadville Elks Club. He also was a member of the National Tooling and Molding Association.

Surviving Glenn are his mother, his wife of 54 years, a son,two daughters, and their respective families which include nine grandchildren some of whom are also married. In addition, a brother and his wife, and several nieces and nephews survive. All of Glenn’s family and especially his grandchildren were very important to him.

Friends may call at Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 7 p.m.

The funeral will be held at Saegertown United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m., with the pastor of the church, the Rev. Ken Custer, officiating.

Memorials may be made to Saegertown United Methodist Church or Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department.
