HERBERT SERVED IN WORLD WAR II--PFC CO. P 206 INFRANTRY BN
I'M SURE HE IS A BROTHER TO JOHN H AND LAWRENCE COTHRON AND THE SON OF JOSEPH AND PHOEBEHerbert Randels Cothron (1909-1957), a 48-year-old local fisherman, died yesterday from drowning, Peace Justice C. R. Kemp said today.
Palatka Police Officer Thomas E. May first learned of the accident from a group gathered at the city docks. Bob Lee and his wife, who were cruising their boat along the St. Johns river, saw a body floating about 600 feet east of the docks and told the people at the dock to call the police when May appeared, officers said.
May radioed Chief Hunsuckle and Sheriff E. Walt Pellicer, and Hunsuckle together with Joe Gibbon picked up the body in Gibbon's boat.
Judge Kemp, who viewed the body, said the man had apparently been dead for some time. Acting as coroner, the judge ruled death by drowning.
Judge Kemp was told Cothron has been a heart patient, which led to speculation Cothron may have fallen from his boat after an attack. His boat has not as yet been reported found.
Funeral services were held today at 3 p.m. at the graveside in the Satsuma Cemetery with Rev. Stuart Clark, pastor of the San Mateo Baptist Church, officiating. Edgar Johnson-W. Carl Davis and Son Funeral Home was in charge.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Billie Cothron; his mother, Mrs. J. H. Cothron; six children; and a brother, L. W. of San Mateo; a sister, Mrs.Harry Luke of Palatka.
He was a veteran of World War II. Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd Monday, 25 Nov 1957.)
