Mrs. Sarah E. Wells, widow of the late James E. Wells, pioneer resident of the Sisco-Pomona district died in a local hospital early Monday morning, after an illness of several weeks and an indisposition of many months.
The deceased was born August 13, 1854, in Kingstree, S.C. and her maiden name was Sarah Ellen Ragin. In 1868 her parents and family moved to Florida coming by boat to Welaka and thence across country to the shores of Lake Broward, now Pomona, and there they made their home for many years. On January 1, 1875, she was married to James Erwin Wells, of the near community of Sisco. They resided at Sisco until the death of Mr. Wells some ten years ago. Since that time, she had made her home at Welaka. She was a faithful member of the Pomona Congregational Church, and until declining health prevented, she was active in all worthwhile work for the community good. She was the mother of five children, three of whom survive her, two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Hinson of Yelvington and Mrs. T. C. Douglas of Welaka, and one son, Randall Wells of Palatka, county tax collector. She leaves seven grandchildren, Miss Janet Wells of Palatka, Misses Pauline and Vera Douglas of Welaka, Mrs. S. Beck of Hastings, Mrs. Alva Clay of Miami, and Mrs. Ruby Rodimir of San Francisco, and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Pomona Congregational Church, with the former pastor, Rev. R. W. Newton, now of Cocoa, officiating.
The following friends acted as pallbearers: Messrs. R. J. Hancock, J. A. Ginn, Henry C. McKenzie, W. A. Williams, Jr., C. S. Green and L. J. McLeod.
Interment was in the family section in the Satsuma-Sisco Cemetery. (Palatka Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 24 Jun 1938.)
The many friends of Miss (sic) Sarah E. Wells regret to learn of her death which occurred Sunday morning in the Glendale Hospital, Palatka. Funeral services were held in the Congregational church at Pomoma. Interment was made at the Satsuma Cemetery.
