GERARD F. STROMMER

October 1, 1932 - December 17, 2011

Formerly of South Blooming Grove, NY

Gerard F. Strommer died peacefully at home in Campbell Hall on Saturday, December 17, 2011 surrounded by his loving wife Ann and family.

He was born to Charles Edward and Alice Marie (nee Fagan) on October 1, 1932 in New York City. Gerry married Ann Sweeney on February 13, 1960 in St. Angela Merici Church, Morris Ave., Bronx, NY.

He was taught by the Ursuline nuns for 12 years and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) for three years before entering the United States Navy in 1950.

He was the proud father of four sons: Gerard F. and his wife, Jody of Washingtonville, Kevin Michael and his wife, Maryanne of Campbell Hall, Brian Thomas and his wife, Sharon of Washingtonville. Gerry was predeceased by his son, Danny and grandson, Brian; brother, Ronald; sisters-in-law, Mary and Joan and brothers-in-law, Raymond and William. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Charles and his wife, Lucille of Blooming Grove; his sisters, Mary Ellen McEnerney and husband, Patrick of Wayne, NJ, Carol Ann Mucci and her fiance, David Bellantonio of Washingtonville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eugene Sweeney and wife, Mary, J.R. Heppes and wife, Catherine, Patricia Traphagen, Wayne Ward and wife, Eileen and many nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Brandy, Brian, Caitlin, Daniel, Owen, Keira, Davan, Sebastian and a new grandchild due in April.

Gerry joined the New York State Police Academy in February 1956 and retired in 1979 after twenty three years as a Senior Investigator. During his career with the Troopers, he was an officer with the Police Benevolent Association representing Troop F and upon retirement became Troop F Historian. After retirement, Gerry became Security Manager for Orange and Rockland Utilities retiring in 1999 after 20 years of service. He was Deputy Supervisor for the Town of Blooming Grove to Helen B. Duelk after which he became acting Supervisor in 1985. He returned to politics as a Town Board member and later became Deputy Supervisor to Katherine E. Bonelli and Deputy Supervisor to Charles J. Bohan. He recently retired in 2010 from the Town of Blooming Grove to enjoy time with his family.

While raising his family, he was very active in community functions. He was an honorary member of the South Blooming Grove Independence Fire Company, was a charter member and President of the Washingtonville Touchdown Club in which he was instrumental in procuring funds for the press box, was also Manager of the Aquarius baseball team and served as President of the Washingtonville Little League. He especially enjoyed selling flowers and plants with the other members of the club, pretending to be experts in the gardening field. While being involved in many fundraisers, he was also proud to send Touchdown Club football players to Don Bosco, Newton, NJ for a week of training. Gerry was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville and was a 4th Degree Knight and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 266 in the Bronx.

Visitation will be held this evening from 7 to 9 p.m., December 19th and 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, December 20th at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Home, 117 Maple Ave., Monroe. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21st at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville followed by interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Washingtonville.
