Henry Drayton Guerard Nancrede was born to Dr. Samuel Joseph Guerard Nancrede (born Samuel Houston) and his wife Cornelia Truxton. Henry's maternal grandfather (via his biological mother Gertrude Parker (Truxtun) Houston, Cornelia's younger sister) was Commodore Thomas Truxtun of Revolutionary War fame. Henry was one of five children, only he survived infancy. Sadly, his father died in New York in a train disaster February 6, 1871, leaving Henry and his mother alone. (Henry's father and four siblings are buried in his grandparents vault in Philadelphia.)

Henry D. G. Nancrede married Mary Linton Taylor on May 23, 1900 in Indiana. The couple had two children, but Mary died in 1908 when the kids were 6 and 3. On the 1910 census, Henry and the kids are living with Henry's mother Carolina (Brady) Nancrede who was widowed in 1871. On December 1, 1911, Henry married Letha Kern in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the 1911 Colorado Springs directory: Nancrede, Henry – moved to Denver. However, in the 1913 Colorado Springs directory, Henry is listed sans Letha. In the 1917 Salt Lake City directory, Mrs. Letha Nancrede is listed as rooming. No other information about Letha has been found; Letha is not mentioned in Henry's obituary.
