Enlisted on 10/19/1861 at Gloucester Court House, VA., he was mustered into Captain John William Puller's Company C "Gloucester Light Dragoons", 21st Virginia Militia, as a Private.
Present on 10/19 - 12/31/1861 Roll.
Detailed 1/8/1862 as a carpenter with Regimental QuarterMaster.
Absent, sick with leave on 1/31 - 2/28/1862 Roll.
Transferred with Company on 5/15/1862 into 2nd Battalion Cavalry; in 6/1862 this battalion added more companies and became 5th Virginia Cavalry, whereupon the company became Company H.
POW 5/4/1863, Thompson's Crossroads, Louisa County, VA.; paroled 6/1863.
Paroled 5/1/1865 at King George Court House, VA.

The 5th Cavalry Regiment was organized in June, 1862, using the 2nd Battalion Virginia Cavalry as its nucleus. The men were from Petersburg and Fairfax, Gloucester, King and Queen, Mathews, Randolph, and James City counties. On November 8, 1864, it was consolidated with the 15th Virginia Cavalry Regiment and redesignated the 5th Regiment Virginia Cavalry Consolidated.
Only 2 surrendered at Appomattox as most cut through the Federal lines and disbanded.
