ST. GEORGE -- Billy "Bill" Jones Woods, 79, St. George, Utah, formerly of Hays, Kan., and Ottawa, Kan., died peacefully at home Monday, September 3, 2012, with family at his side.

He was born May 10, 1933, in Lewisburg, Tenn., to Herman and Catherine (Tillman) Woods. He graduated from Pulaski High School, Pulaski, Va. in 1952 and attended East Tennessee State College before enlisting in the Air Force. He served as a staff sergeant and radar technician based at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kan. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he attended Kansas State University, where he was awarded a football scholarship and received a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting.

He married Shirley Ann Williams on June 3, 1956, in Ottawa, Kan. He was employed by Marathon Oil Co., Findlay, Ohio; Hercules Inc., DeSoto, Kan.; and High Plains Sports Medicine, Hays, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Harold Woods, James Woods, Herman Woods Jr., Maurice Woods and Charles Woods; and sisters Mary Catherine Burrahm, Louise Davis and Bettye Elwell.

Survivors include his wife; children Gregory Woods, M.D., and wife, Mary, Richmond, Ind.; Tod Woods, Ph.D., and wife, Linda, Livermore, Calif.; and Jill Woods and husband, Dan Myslawchuk, Olathe, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandsons; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Bill will always be remembered for his love of God, country, family, friends and football. He was dedicated to give back to the sport that had given him so many opportunities. He spent many years coaching youth football and his players will never forget his guidance to "square up your shoulders, keep your feet moving, and go until the whistle blows."

A service was held in St. George, Utah at 11 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2012, at Calvary Chapel, 3922 S. Pioneer Road; also in Olathe, Kan. at 11 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 at Cathedral Church of the King, 728 N. Stevenson. Inurnment will follow at Highland Cemetery, 1050 E. 15th St., Ottawa, Kan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Billy Jones Woods Memorial Fund, c/o Kansas State University Foundation, 2323 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
