A recent Whitehall High School graduate died from natural causes at his home on June 4, an autopsy report confirms.

Daniel Kieth Abercrombie, age 18, who received his diploma at graduation ceremonies two days earlier, June 2.

Muskegon County Sheriff Det. Roger Robillard, who did the death investigation, said the autopsy report by Brian Hunter, M.D. of Sparrow Hospital in Lansing gave the cause of death as pulmonary emboli (blood clot) in the lung.

Robillard said he received the report July 24, a day after it was signed.

The detective said the report indicated the blood clot could have resulted from a hereditary condition, disease or prior injury. "We don't know what actually caused it (blood clot)," Robillard said.

The detective said a blood screen for a long list of drugs was conducted after his death, and it did not reveal and "illicit street drugs in his system." Robillard said the screen did indicate oxycodone pain reliever drug in his system, but not above the therapeutic level.

Abercrombie did suffer from asthma, but the medical examiner had ruled it out as a cause of death.

At 8:32 a.m. on June 4, Central Dispatch called the White Lake Fire Authority to the Abercrombie home at 5315 W. Lakewood Road in Fruitland Township for an unresponsive person. A neighbor of the Abercrombie's, who is a member of the White Lake Fire Authority, immediately went to the home and began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Efforts to revive Abercrombie last more than a half hour.

About seven years earlier the Abercrombie family moved from Houston, Texas to Whitehall. He had participated in football, wrestling and track in high school. His father, Benjamin Abercrombie died unexpectedly in 1998, and a sister, Summer Anne, died in 1991.

Daniel Kieth Abercrombie is survived by his mother, Becky, and older brother, Luke, along with grandparents in Texas and California.

A funeral service was held June 8 in the Whitehall Junior High School gym.
