James L. Callender, 85 of Friendship, died Tuesday September 11, 2012 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born August 29, 1927 in Huntington, WV to the late Elza J and Cretta V. Newman Callender. James was retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and was a World War II Navy Veteran. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Mildred G. Callender, a brother Roy B Callender and a sister Octovine Venturino.

James is survived by 3 daughters; Gaye L.(Tom) DePriest of Oil City PA, Rebecca L. (Harold) White of Friendship and Jamie L. Miller of New Boston, a brother Lynn Callender of Cleveland, 6 grandchildren; Heather N.(Nick) Skokowski, Jarrod L.(Courtney) DePriest, Cassandra L.(Frank) Prastine, Amanda M Taylor and Justine J Miller and Kaylin E. Miller, 6 great grandchildren; Kurtis J Morgan, Nicole R Skokowski, Sean M Prastine, Brooklyn DePriest, Beckett DePriest and Hayden Miller. Also surviving is a special friend Mary Knox.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth with Jimmy McCullough officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery with graveside military rites by James Dickey Post 23 American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday and one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
