Ocala - Dorothy Quinn Garrett, 89, of Ocala, FL passed from this existence in the same manner that she lived every day of her life---without fear or regret, on Saturday, September 8, 2012 in Ocala.
She was born on September 18, 1922 in Litchfield, IL, daughter to the late Thomas J. and Mary Edith (Ford) Quinn. She had an indelible, far-reaching, positive impact on everyone who met her. The emptiness that is the result of her passing will never be filled.
After graduating from high school, Dorothy's first employment was as a beautician. Several years later, she moved to Detroit, Michigan and began working for Michigan Bell Telephone. Over 40 years of service, she rose through the ranks from operator to a management position. After her retirement, she traveled throughout Michigan as a training consultant.
During her time in the Detroit area, Dorothy, along with her younger brother Thomas, undertook the upbringing of their older sister Florence's son, Charles Martin. From 1954 until her final day, Dorothy guided Charles on his journey from childhood to adulthood, providing unconditional love and understanding, as her brother, Thomas, continues to do.
She married Roland Garrett in 1976, and they moved to Chiefland, Florida in 1981. Roland died in 1991. Dorothy moved to Ocala, Florida eight years later. After taking a year to settle in, she was joined by her brother, Thomas. In 2001 her sister Eugenia bought a home across the street. Until the end of her life, Dorothy was a member of numerous charitable organizations, often serving as president. She has been honored as "Citizen of the Year" and "Woman of the Year" for her selfless contributions of time, energy and funding.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings Francis, Robert, John, Morris, Margaret, Isabel and Florence in addition to her husband, Roland. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Eugenia Magalotti, her brother Thomas James Quinn, her nephew/son Charles Martin, as well as countless nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many, many friends; all of whom feel an immeasurable loss.
A memorial service will be held in the TimberRidge Chapel of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 9695 SW 110th St., Ocala, FL 34481 on Saturday, October 13th at 4:00PM. A private graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Park, Ocala at a later date. Memorial Contributions may be given to Hospice of Marion County, PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478.
