Robert L. "Jr." Martin, 66, of Carbon Cliff, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center , Knoxville, Iowa.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Family Funeral Services, Colona. Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

He was born May 18, 1937, in rural Marion County, Alabama in a log cabin, the son of Robert Lester and Stella Phillips Martin. He married Annette Grace Rotthier, daughter of Henry and Henrietta Norris Rotthier, on Dec. 19, 1958. They had one daughter, Bambi Dietta. He later married Joyce Patronagio McFarland, daughter of Sam and Myrtle Odquist Patronagio. They had one daughter, Sherri Lynn. His last marriage was to Nancy Hughes.

He enlisted in the US Army Aug. 31, 1955. He completed his basic training as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC on July 19, 1956 and was stationed there from October 1955 to February 5, 1957. He was also stationed in Munich, Germany. He was honorably discharged from active duty on Aug. 20, 1958. He then served in the US Army Reserve until Aug. 31, 1961.

He was a meat cutter at the Oscar Mayer plant in Davenport for many years. He enjoyed bird watching and western movies.

Survivors are his daughter, Bambi Dietta Martin Ghys; six grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Tony Fisher and a devoted friend Curtis Prescott.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Sherri Lynn Martin Stombaugh.
