Henry was a 22-year old Senior at East Carolina Teachers College when he registered for the draft in 1940. On August 15, 1941, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighed 176 pounds, was single with no dependents, and had finished four years of college. He enlisted as an Aviation Cadet.
