Previously served in the 6th Inishkillen Dragoons. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in 1915, from Montreal. He was assigned to the 6th Hussars. Attestation papers for William Binns list his wife as Annie Mary Binns, that he had at least 5 children (whose guardian was Candice Alice Maud Binns). He served in France, but due to his age and medical conditions he was discharged as medically unfit, returned to permanent convalescent care in Montreal.
