Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as 1st Sergeant, Company A, 14th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 31, 1862. He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant on September 10, 1864, promoted Captain and transferred to Company I on December 1, 1864, ans was honorably mustered out June 18, 1865.

He was severely wounded in action on July 9, 1864 at the Battle of Monocacy, Maryland

He was brevetted Major, US Volunteers, April 2, 1865 for “for gallant and meritorious services before Petersburg, Va.”

On March 20, 1906 his wife, Lydia Barkalow Hurst, filed for a US Army Widow’s Pension (Application #845466, Certificate #852071).
