John Wesley Bryant was born on July 9, 1837, the son of Fleming Hancock and Jane Bryant Hancock from the Dodson community.

Like many people in that area of Patrick County, he left his Patrick County home and served admirably in the Civil War as a member of Company D of the 12th Virginia Infantry although he was hospitalized quite a bit during this time due to illness.

After his return, in 1870 he fathered a son, Larkin Green Martin with Aramatha Elizabeth "Math" Martin and six years later, a daughter, Lourinda Ellen Martin was born of this union.

Ultimately he married Judith Ann Cox on June 24, 1877. Within one year of their marriage, their first daughter Lelia Jane was born. Together they had two other daughters Fannie Matilda and Lila Elizabeth as well as two sons Thomas Obrine and Peter S. Bryant who both passed away at early ages.

His wife Judith passed away at age 71 on April 2, 1917. On September 4, 1920, he was baptized by the Elder James Goode Lane Hash in the Smith River near Union Primitive Baptist Church. In 1921, his oldest daughter Lelia Jane Bryant Wright passed away.

On Sunday, May 26, 1923, he passed away and was buried at a cemetery which bears his name even today, the John Wesley Bryant Cemetery which is located about two miles behind the former home of Otis "Lightning" Setliff and his wife on a very peaceful ridge just above the pond.

Gravesite Details

The condition of the grave site is good. There is some slight mold on the tombstone but that is due to the somewhat damp conditions of the forest as the sun seldom shines through the heavy forest cover of that mountainous area.
