Billy Joe Batten, 71, of Frontenac, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001. He was born April 15, 1929, at Arma, to John L. and Erma I. Fruit Batten. As a small child, he moved with his family to Croweburg. They later moved to Pittsburg, where he attended school.

Mr. Batten enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the flagship for the Seventh Fleet at Tsington, China. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

He moved to Wichita, where he met and married Patty L. Palmer. She survives at the home.

Mr. Batten worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and Beech Aircraft Corporation at Wichita. He joined the U.S. Border Patrol, serving on both the Mexican and Canadian borders. In 1968, he left the patrol and returned to Pittsburg. He worked for Helio Aircraft Corporation, the City of Pittsburg and Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons. After retirement, he worked part-time at Pittsburg Automotive as a delivery driver.

He was a life member and past commander of the Pittsburg VFW Post No. 1158 and was past president of the IBF&O Union Local at Parsons.

Additional survivors include a son, William E. Batten of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Nikki S. Burke of Pittsburg; and six grandchildren, including a granddaughter, Crystal Batten, who was raised in Mr. Batten's home.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie A. Batten; a sister, Cora W. Barrett; and a brother, John L. Batten Jr.
According to his wishes, Mr. Batten has been taken for cremation. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg, where the Pittsburg VFW Post No. 1158 will provide flag presentation ceremonies. The family will receive friends following the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, Pittsburg.
