Bert Hassell made history in aviation when he took off from a grassy airport in 1928 from Rockford Il. He crash landed on the ice caps of Greenland when he ran out of fuel. Bert and his copilot survived 15 days until they were rescued. In 1968 the airplane was recovered and was restored. The airplane is now in a museum in Rockford Il. It is known as the Greater Rockford Airplane.
