She was a woman of substance. Her diminutive stature belied her strength and tenacity. She will be remembered for her perseverance, resourcefulness and style.

The petite Polish girl who went to work at 13 to support her family grew into a sophisticated business woman, always dressed to the nines and wearing her signature high heels.

Regina Buckleh, age 99, died on August 21, at her beloved home. Regina was born on November 20, 1912 in Chicago, IL. Her parents were Lucyan(Louis) and Agnes (Goniakowski) Perkowski. Regina was married to Albert Buckleh who preceded her in death.

Regina attended grammar school before quitting school at 13 for a job in a sewing factory. It was during the Great Depression and though she knew nothing about sewing, she quickly learned every aspect of the manufacturing business. She met her husband while he was repairing sewing machines. After their marriage they began a contract sewing business. Before her husband's unexpected death in 1946, they had built the business to nine sewing factories in southern Illinois including the Four Sisters Manufacturing Company in Flora. She continued the business until selling out at age 70 and managed the Kern Manufacturing Company in Flora until retiring in 1992 at age 80.

Regina had two primary life "jobs", the sewing factories and her five daughters. She was successful at both, miraculously balancing work and civic duty with raising her daughters. She often commented that she had two families, "one at home and one at the factory". Up to her death, Regina continued to enjoy monthly breakfasts with her former employees, a testimony to the mutual respect and loyalty she cultivated.

Mrs. Buckleh was one of the founding members of the Flora Bank and Trust and remained on the Board of Directors until her resignation in September, 2010. She was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, a member of the Business & Professional Women's Club, Illinois Youth Commission, Flora Industrial Commission and St. Ann's Altar Society. Regina leaves behind the legacy of the 4th of July All American Boy and Girl Contest. In the early 50's, she was the first sponsor and emcee of the annual event and continued to do so for over thirty years. Not one to shy away from challenges, she was active politically, as well.

Surviving are her five daughters, Mariann Reynolds of Huntington Beach, CA and Flora; Pat (James) Shipley of Huntington Beach, CA; Gina (Daniel) Riggle of Shorewood, IL; Tima Buckleh of Huntington Beach, CA; and Maureen (Hal) Wineland of Seattle, WA. Ten grandchildren include Buckleh and Michael Reynolds, Lisa Knott, Reene VanMatre, Jenny Buettner, Paul Riggle, Ann Streitz, Wendy, Ryan and Booth Wineland. Mrs. Buckleh was also blessed with eleven great grandchildren. Her sister, Lucille Dingman, of Flora also survives. Regina was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and three sisters.

The family will receive friends at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home between 4 and 8 pm on Friday, August 24 with a Rosary service at 6:30 pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Catholic Church the following Saturday morning at 10 am with Father Martin-Edward Ohajunwa officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Justice (Chicago), IL.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Catholic Church of Flora, IL.
