Ira J. "Jim" Alligood, Jr., 96, of Spring Garden Township, died at 8 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2012, at his residence. He was the husband of Arlene J. (Oram) Alligood.

Born January 2, 1916 in Beaufort County, N.C., a son of the late Ira J. and Mary Elizabeth (Spruill) Alligood.

He was a graduate of Creswell High School in North Carolina.
Mr. Alligood was retired owner and president of National Systems, located on Roosevelt Avenue. As the owner he invented the coin operated vacuum cleaner design that is today's standard in the coin operated car wash business along with many other products in use in that industry today. Prior to that Mr. Alligood was the national sales manager for Red Dot Cigar Company in Red Lion, and Division Sales Manager for American Tobacco Company. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for service in the India Burma Theater in WWII with the 12th Combat Cargo Squadron logging over 800 flight hours in heavily laden, unarmed cargo aircraft over "The Hump" delivering desperately needed supplies into China. Conditions were extreme and hostile air forces were operating in the area. Through this he earned the highest achievable flight certification permitting the pilot of any aircraft in any weather conditions, at any time.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Alligood is survived by a son, Gary S. Alligood, and his wife Sheryl, of Chelsea, Mich.; a stepson, Randy Potter of York; stepdaughter, Charlene Bupp, and her husband Larry, of York; four grandchildren, Jordan Alligood, Kristen Ardal, Nicole DeHollander, and James DeHollander; seven step grandchildren, Olivia Young, Shawn Naugle, Kevin Bupp, David Bupp, Michelle Miller, Elizabeth Hartranft, and Audra Keener; four great-grandchildren; ten step great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lewis Alligood of Chatanooga, Tenn. and Horace Alligood of Greensboro, N.C. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda DeHollander; and two brothers, Orville Alligood and Heber Alligood.

Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery, with military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
