Lucy was the daughter of David and Rachel Clayton and the wife of James Totten Polhemus. She was the mother of eight children: Edgar W., John Martin, David Clayton, James Alfred who died in infancy, Charles Henry, Annie Lucretia, Caroline, and Ida Flora. In the 1880's, she and James homesteaded in Nebraska. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carrie. Following her death, James T. returned to the Silverton, New Jersey area, where he remarried and spent the remainder of his life.
