Carolyn, known as Carrie, was the daughter of James Totten & Lucy Ann (Clayton) Polhemus. She moved to Nebraska with her parents from New Jersey but died of typhoid not long after arriving. The name on her headstone is "Caroline G.," but another source, the late family historian James Wilbur Clayton, indicates that her middle name was Adele. A collateral descendant in New Jersey left virtual flowers and a note that reads, "According to my mother, Carrie died of a broken heart. She did not want to move to Nebraska as she was in love with someone back home in New Jersey. That always seemed so tragically sad to me."
