N.Y.S. CONSERVATION OFFICER DIED MAR. 29.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Kauffman attended Lafayette H.S. and was active in hockey, football and rowing. In 1941 he was on the Lafayette H.S. rowing crew that won the U.S. National Scholastic Championship 8 oar shell in July and won the Royal Canadian Henley in St. Catherines Ont. in August.
College and rowing scholarships were put aside so he could enlist in the U.S. Navy in W.W. II. He volunteered for Motor Torpedo (PT) boat duty and fought in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific Theaters. During the invasion of Southern France, PT 555 hit an enemy mine, the survivors were hidden by the free French forces and took part in their actions until the crew could be returned to their unit in Marseilles.
An avid outdoorsman, Bob became a NYS Game Protector in 1949 and moved to Eden, N.Y. From 1954-1983 he was involved with the Hunter Safety Training classes at the Erie County Fair. After promotion to Lieutenant, he worked in the Finger Lakes before moving to Alden in 1968. He retired from the NYSDEC with more than 40 years of service.
Married in 1947 to Wilma Endress, he is the father of Kathy (Edward) Riefler of Marcellus, NY, Dr. Barbara Kauffman of Geneva, NY, Bob (JoAnne) Kauffman of Alden, NY and the late Marcia Kauffman. He is the grandfather of Ryan (Ryann), Devin, Kyle Riefler and Katherine, Natalie Kauffman.
He was laid to rest in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery Hamburg, NY.
