His granddaughter Barbara Day said was a horse trader and especially liked Morgan horses.

They had a farm in Fond du Lac. He had stomach problems for many years. James was helping paint Pat Wilsey's resort (they were friends for many years) and was going to stay to help there for the summer with Jessie Day. She went home with the family while he stayed at the hospital. James died at the hospital in Rhinelander.
