He was the son of Hershel Elmer Stites and Mattie R. Chisam. He was employed at the former Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois for 35 years, retiring as a crane mechanic in 1986. Following his retirement, he went to work at Bollman Motors in Rock Falls. He was a U.S. Army, Korean War veteran and a member of the Sterling American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and hunting.
