When Caroline came to America, people spelled her name as Caroline- which stayed with her. In Germany, it was Karoline.

Karoline (Caroline) is the daughter of Johann Gottlob Mattjescheke and Marie Dorothee Greim. This was found on the German Church record. And, this is found in a book, which a cousin in Germany (new cousin!) found that has Rodig and Mattjescheke information in it. Karoline Henriette was baptized at 3 days old, on 17 August 1824.

Karoline Henriette Matiejscheck (Mattiescheck) married Johann Theodor Herman Rodig in 1850 in Germany, near Cottbus. They had two sons, Charles Herman Louis Rodig, and Albert Emil Rodig both born in Germany before they left and came to America. The sons were young, when they arrived on the Sir Isaac Newton passenger ship in Hamburg, in 1857 to travel to America with both parents. While on the ship, Johann Theodor became ill, and sadly died. The ship was at that time on the waters in Newfoundland, Canada. They were almost to America, and so he almost made it. Theodor was buried at sea, in Newfoundland. As Caroline arrived in New York, with two young sons, she declared she was heading to Cleveland. She may have had other family with her, but it was unknown. She ended up in the Germany community in Cleveland, so she definitely knew where the family was headed.

In Cleveland, after arriving and settling, both sons were working at their own skills with jewelry making and in the silver trade in their own shop. By 1862, they also implemented printing their own papers, and were asked to support the American government to print paper coins, because the silver to make quarters and other coins was being used to make ammunition for use in the Civil War. The boys agreed to this. I have seen copies of their paper quarters, but do not have any. Still looking for some! A cousin is traveling to California to look in boxes his dad has and we are hoping to find some.

Caroline married John Hemrich, a widower also, in 1871 in Cleveland. They were only married for 5 years before she died. She is buried next to John in the Highland Park Cemetery. She is in grave 1, and he is in grave 2.
